Change Your 2020 FSA or Enroll Now

Due to COVID-19, the IRS is providing the opportunity to make changes to Healthcare and/or Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs)—or sign up for new FSAs—outside of the annual benefits Open Enrollment period. This is a one-time change, effective from the date change is made through December 31, 2020. Amounts already contributed to 2020 FSAs will not be refunded. 

What: A one-time opportunity to enroll in or change Healthcare and/or Dependent Care FSA contributions for the 2020 calendar year: 

  • Changes to Dependent Day Care FSA elections, increases to Healthcare FSA elections and new FSA enrolments should be completed at the same time in CUBES.
  • You cannot decrease your contribution amount below the amount already reimbursed from your FSA account and the amount deducted from your paycheck.
  • The Effective Date of the change is the date you complete the process and “Checkout” in CUBES. 
  • Deduction amount changes will take effect with the first administratively-possible paycheck after August 7, 2020.
  • The carryover limit for unused 2020 Healthcare FSA funds will increase to $550 (from $500).

When: Monday, July 27, 2020, through Friday, August 7, 2020. You can only change your FSA elections once during this time. 
 

How to change your contribution amount(s) or start contributing 

Dependent Care FSA

If you wish to enroll in the Dependent Care FSA, or change your 2020 contribution:

  1. Between July 27, 2020, and August 7, 2020, log in to CUBES and confirm your access through multi-factor authentication (DUO). 
     
  2. Click “Get Started” under CHANGE MY FSA CONTRIBUTION; then “Select” in My Events; then “Change my FSA Elections” and follow the prompts to newly enroll in, increase or decrease your Dependent Care FSA. 
     
  3. Don’t forget to “Checkout”.
     
Healthcare FSA

If you wish to enroll in the Healthcare FSA, or increase your 2020 contribution:

  1. Between July 27, 2020, and August 7, 2020, log in to CUBES and confirm access through multi-factor authentication (DUO). 
     
  2. Click “Get Started” under CHANGE MY FSA CONTRIBUTION; then “Select” in My Events; then “Change my FSA Elections” and follow the prompts to newly enroll in or increase your election for the Healthcare FSA. 
     
  3. Don’t forget to “Checkout”.

If you wish to decrease your 2020 contribution (the amount you elected for the year), please email the Columbia Benefits Service Center: hrbenefits@columbia.edu. Note you cannot go below the amount already reimbursed from your account and the amount deducted from your paycheck.


If you have 2019 claims that were never submitted for reimbursement from your 2019 Healthcare and/or Dependent Care FSA, you may still be able to submit eligible expenses for reimbursement. Contact the Columbia Benefits Service Center for instructions.
