At-Home COVID-19 Test Reimbursement

Effective Saturday, January 15, 2022, you will be able to seek reimbursement through your health plan for up to eight (8) at-home COVID tests per month.

As announced earlier this week by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, effective Saturday, January 15, 2022, you will be able to seek reimbursement through your health plan for up to eight (8) at-home COVID tests per 30-day period.  If your dependents are enrolled in coverage, you can also seek reimbursement for up to eight (8) at-home COVID tests per dependent per 30-day period.  

What You Need to Know

If you are enrolled in any of the University’s medical plans, beginning on Saturday, January 15th you are eligible for reimbursement of up to 8 at-home COVID tests per 30 days for each enrolled member in the plan. 

We are working closely with UnitedHealthcare (UHC) to determine the process for reimbursement and we will provide more information on how to submit claims for reimbursement as soon as it is available. While we await further guidance, please make sure to retain all receipts (paper or electronic).

If you have medical insurance coverage outside of Columbia University, please check with your health plan provider for more information.

  • What types of tests are eligible for reimbursement?
    • The UHC Plan will cover all FDA-approved COVID-19 at-home diagnostic tests
  • How do I request reimbursement?
    • Please save the receipt (paper or electronic) for all tests purchased beginning on January 15th. As soon as UHC has established the process for submitting receipts for reimbursement you will be notified and provided instructions.
  • Will the Plan reimburse the full cost of at-home tests?
    • In most circumstances, yes. More information will be provided as it becomes available. Until additional information is available, the full cost of at-home tests will be reimbursed.
  • Can I use at-home tests to fulfill any of the Columbia University COVID-19 testing requirements?
    • No.
