Dear HR Network and SBO Colleagues:

As of August 1, 2022, a new minimum hourly rate of $21.50/hour is in effect for all student casuals performing instructional or research work. This rate applies to student casuals hired into casual-instructional, casual-research, and casual-academic support positions.

The new minimum rate applies to all students employed in these positions including:

  • Ph.D. students who are not on appointment but are employed as student casuals in casual-instructional, casual-research, and casual-academic support positions.
  • Master’s students and undergraduate students employed in casual-instructional, casual-research, and casual-academic support positions, including those with work-study jobs.

The new minimum rate does not apply to the two other categories of casual employees: casual-administrative and non-student casual. The $15 per hour minimum campus pay rate continues to apply to these employees.  Please note that all students who are not registered at Columbia University and all non-students hired for any casual work should continue to be categorized as non-student casuals and hired into the non-student casual position type in PAC.

You should be mindful of required minimums and set rates accordingly based on the work the student is doing and their appropriate position.  As with all minimums, the actual rates may exceed the minimum rate if financial approval has been granted and budget capacity exists.

Sincerely,

Daniel Driscoll
Vice President & Chief Human Resources Officer
Columbia University
