Sprintax Calculus for Foreign National Tax Compliance
Sprintax Calculus is Columbia University’s secure system for collecting the information needed to determine a foreign national’s U.S. tax residency status, applicable tax withholding, and eligibility for tax treaty benefits. The system also generates or provides access to required tax forms associated with payments from Columbia.
Access Sprintax Calculus
If Columbia has asked you to complete or update a foreign national tax profile, log in to Sprintax Calculus using your Columbia UNI and password. Follow the prompts to login. You can also review this short JobAid if needed.
Before You Begin
Sprintax Calculus will guide you through the information required for your tax profile. You may need:
- Your passport and current visa information
- Your immigration documents, such as Form I-20, DS-2019, or I-797
- Your U.S. entry and departure history
- Your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, if one has been issued to you
- Information about your Columbia appointment or payments
Complete all required sections and submit any forms or documentation requested by the system. Columbia will review your information and contact you if anything further is needed.
Keep Your Information Current
Update your Sprintax Calculus profile when requested by Columbia or when relevant information changes, including your immigration status, visa classification, U.S. entry or departure dates, Social Security or ITIN information, or payment circumstances.
Completing a Sprintax Calculus profile does not automatically qualify you for tax treaty benefits. Eligibility depends on your individual circumstances and the applicable treaty.
Any required treaty forms must be completed and approved before the benefit can be applied.
Sprintax Calculus Is Not for Filing Your Annual Tax Return
Sprintax Calculus is used by Columbia to determine the appropriate tax treatment of payments made to you. It does not prepare or file your annual federal or state income tax return.
F- and J-status students and scholars seeking assistance with Form 8843 or an annual nonresident federal income tax return should visit ISSO’s page.
Forms and Year-End Information
Depending on your individual circumstances, Sprintax Calculus may generate or provide access to tax-related forms such as Form 8233, Form W-8BEN, and Form 1042-S.
