Dear Colleagues:
We are aware that our arriving non-resident alien students and faculty are experiencing long wait times when scheduling appointments at Social Security offices. Given these delays, we will accept a confirmation of an in-person appointment instead of requiring a receipt indicating that someone has applied for a social security number (SSN) when submitting template-based hire (TBH) transactions.
Please keep in mind that new employees must still complete the SSN application process and provide their Social Security number to their departments once they obtain it.
We send regular email reminders to departments about employees who have Columbia-issued temporary numbers. Departments should continue to follow up with these employees until they receive their Social Security number.
