Dear Colleagues:
Effective October 19, Columbia University transitioned from Tax Navigator to Sprintax Calculus, a new system for managing foreign national tax compliance.
Sprintax Calculus collects the information Columbia needs to determine an individual's U.S. tax residency status, applicable tax withholding, and eligibility for tax treaty benefits. Depending on the individual's circumstances, the system may also generate or provide access to related tax forms, including Form 8233, Form W-8BEN, and Form 1042-S.
What Has Changed
- Sprintax Calculus has replaced Tax Navigator.
- Existing foreign national tax records have been transitioned to the new system.
- Users can access Sprintax Calculus with their Columbia UNI and password through single sign-on.
- Individuals who need to complete or update their foreign national tax profiles will receive instructions regarding any required action.
An Important Distinction
Sprintax Calculus is different from the Sprintax tax-preparation service offered through Columbia's International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO).
- Sprintax Calculus is used by Columbia to determine the appropriate tax treatment and withholding on payments made by the University.
- ISSO's Sprintax tax-preparation service helps eligible F- and J-status students and scholars prepare Form 8843 and their annual nonresident federal income tax returns.
Additional information and access instructions are available on the CUHR Foreign Nationals website.
For questions about Columbia payments, tax withholding, tax treaty documentation, or Form 1042-S, please submit a request through the HR Service Center or call 212-851-2888.
Thank you for helping us direct foreign national students, scholars, faculty, and staff to the appropriate Sprintax resource.
